The children in the Kunst and Kijk pilot are poor. They live in small flats in high rise buildings - concrete jungles. There children are mostly Muslim whose parents have immigrated from Morocco or Turkey.
Most children in poverty experience higher degrees of stress, have limited contact with parents, and watch more television. Offering a program that meets their specific needs is crucial.
The five factors are needed to meet their specific needs are: Skill building, hope, accommodations, relationships, and enrichment.. Reckoning not only acknowledges these, but implements these needs into each workshop.

Eric Jensen, in his book, Super Teaching, outlines what is needed today when working with children in today's world, including those that live in poverty. He states the following, "Poverty changes the brain for the worse. Poverty is more than money; it cuts across all areas of one's life, including emotional, psychological, social, linguistic, financial, medical and career."

It is vital that strategies and intentional practices are in place so that we can be a changing agent for these children. It is possible and the more positive experiences they can have, the better for their brains, hearts and overall health and development

Reckoning is seeking to create more of these spaces.
