Kunst and Kijk is our project we are launching in January. In preparation of that, Shawna is training local leaders currently running an after school program of about 30 children in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city. Most of the children are from immigrant families from Morocco, Turkey, Ghana, Egypt and the Middle East. Most of them are Muslims and the mothers stay often and observe the class.
Last week I had Abdul-Ali and Akash help me prepare the lunch for the other students. These boys have lots of energy and usually get in trouble at school and at home. We are finding ways of encouraging them to see themselves as everyday leaders, filling the needs right in front of them with positive behavior and caring for others.
The current leaders are learning that promoting positive behaviors and embedding character in the entire program is much more effective. We are designing a whole experience for the kids that provides a place of safety and belonging. By January, we will be ready to launch all aspects of a Reckoning initiative as we develop templates for other after school programs broadening our scope.
