Caring is a fairly easy concept to understand. It is at the heart of ethical behavior and brings all the other virtues into focus. It clarifies if an action is fair, respectful or responsible as we measure how that action was received.
The launching point for caring was to offer to the students a time to make a card for someone, or a bookmark, just something they could give as a way to encourage someone else. Isn't it interesting when you ask someone what made their day special, it is usually because they received a small gift, a thank you for something unexpected, or even a smile from a stranger can lift the spirits of someone else.
The students were given the opportunity to make something for someone. Nakmed, seen above, made a card for his sister. One of the mentors got a card from 2 of her students, and many were made for moms and dads. Such a simple way to show carness.
One of the other groups decided to write poetry and enter it onto the Valentine Peace Project. There were some really nice poems written. Bringing a greater awareness of the injustices around the world and providing a way for the students to respond and find a voice for themselves is another way to culivate caring. Just another way we are helping the students walk into the future they want to create.
